(1714-1779) Уинтроп, Джон (четвертый)Один из первых американских ученых, астроном и математик. С 1738 профессор математики и естественной истории Гарвардского университета [ Harvard University]. Его научные интересы лежали в основном в области астрономии: пути движения планет, наблюдения солнечных пятен, расчеты орбит комет. Ввел в программы университета алгебру и исчисление, в 1746 создал при университете первую лабораторию экспериментальной физики. В 1766 стал членом английской академии наук - Королевского общества.
